BD and BI tags

After Fixmating(Picard) my Bam file I BaseRecalibrated the new Bam file.
Its size jumped from 101 to 173 Gb.
Is this due to the added BD and BI tags?
What is the meaning of these tags?
Are they used in variant calling?

Hi Hans,
These are base insertion and deletion qualities. See this thread for a little more background info.

Hi Hans,
To clarify, the variant callers (both UG and HC) still use the BD and BI tags for calling. We are still looking into other approaches. My apologies if the information I linked to was confusing.

Thanks again.
I understand that these BD and BI tags are not used in further analysis of the Bam data such as variant calling etc.

Thanks again Geraldine. Looking at your name we could be 'zuiderburen'.
Hah, indeed; I'm a recently transplanted Brussels sprout.
Hi Geraldine,
Just checking if GATK3.1.x variant callers are still using BD and BI tags? It's been about 6 months since the last comment here.
@tgenahmet I believe they still are.
