Uintended multithreading

While running the base recalibrator ( and also indel realigner) I have noticed that multiple CPU threads are launched as can be seen by linux "top" command even if nt=nct=1. Is this the default behaviour or something else is happening in my case. I have seen this in both 3.5 and 3.6 GATK version
