VariantRecal without reference

If I'm calling variants on an organism (or population) without established common/known variants, is performing variant recalibration redundant? My provisional approach would be to use high-quality calls as a reference variant set, and then recalibrate based upon these, but I'm really not sure if this is correct.

I have read the documentation so apologies if it clearly answers my question already.
